Independent British Film Wins Two Angel Awards in Monaco
Carey Films’ second feature film, A MIND OF HER OWN, which recently won a coveted Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival in America, has now added two Angel Awards at the Monaco International Film Festival.
The two awards were for Best Newcomer which went to the film’s lead actress, Nicky Talacko and for Best Supporting Actress which went to Amanda Rawnsley who plays the lead character’s best friend.
In December, Nicky and the film’s writer/director, Owen Carey Jones, travelled to the Principality to be presented with the awards at a special ceremony held, appropriately, in the Theatre Princess Grace which overlooks the harbour.
Speaking about the awards, Owen Carey Jones said: “following on from the Crystal Heart Award in October, these awards should ensure that the film receives wide distribution and is seen by many people. They are especially pleasing because they reward two of the actors who contributed so much to the making of the film.”
Inspired by a true story, A MIND OF HER OWN tells the poignant and moving story of Sophie, whose dream of becoming a doctor is obstructed by the fact that she is severely dyslexic. But Sophie, encouraged by her closest friend, Becky, has never been one to give up and, despite being advised by parents and school teachers to be realistic and pursue something less academic, she remains determined to achieve her ambition and refuses to settle for anything less.
“I hope that the film will encourage the one in twenty people who are dyslexic to go on to achieve their full potential and not allow themselves to be written off as slow or lazy just because they have difficulty reading,” said Owen.
