A
Mind of Her Own Secures UK Theatrical Release
Carey
Films second feature film, A MIND OF HER OWN, which recently won
a coveted Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival in America
and two Angel Awards at the Monaco International Film Festival is to have
a UK theatrical release through Vue Cinemas. The film will be the first
film to be shown on general release in Leeds, where it was shot, using
the latest digital cinema technology spearheaded by the UK Film Council.
Before the opening night on 24th March, an invited audience of cast, crew
and others connected with the production will attend a Gala Premiere at
the Vue cinema in The Light in the centre of Leeds followed by a champagne
reception. Speaking about the release, Owen Carey Jones, writer/producer/director
of the film, said: Following on from the festival awards which the
film has won over the last six months, the theatrical release of A MIND
OF HER OWN through one of the UKs largest cinema chains is very
pleasing. The fact that we negotiated this release with Vue ourselves
having been turned down by every UK distributor shows that exhibitors
are aware of the need to build new audiences by widening the range of
films being shown in cinemas, something that the Film Council is being
instrumental in bringing about through the establishment of the Digital
Screen Network in multiplexes throughout the UK. I hope that
the theatrical release of this film will play a small part in helping
to move the Film Council's agenda forward, opening the door to other high
quality independent feature films which are perhaps a little outside the
mainstream fare normally found in our cinemas, said Owen. Inspired
by a true story, A MIND OF HER OWN tells the poignant and moving story
of Sophie, whose dream of becoming a doctor is obstructed by the fact
that she is severely dyslexic. But Sophie, encouraged by her closest friend,
Becky, has never been one to give up and, despite being advised by parents
and school teachers to be realistic and pursue something less academic,
she remains determined to achieve her ambition and refuses to settle for
anything less.
